Visiting School Groups

Have your students explore Virginia’s history at the VHS. Choose from a menu of SOL-based programs that focus on themes found in your classroom or create a unique program tailored to your group’s individual needs. Reservations are required for all school groups visiting the VHS.

Reservation information and tips

  • Field trips are FREE.
  • Reservations for field trips may be made by completing the Field trip request form, or you may call the school programs coordinator at 804.342.9652.
  • We ask that field trips be scheduled at least three weeks in advance. (March, April, and May fill up quickly, so please book early)
  • Review our Tips for your visit with your students and chaperones before you arrive at the museum. Buses should drop students off at the rear of the building at the Marcus and Carole M. Weinstein Learning Center and then park in front of the building along Boulevard.

  • SOL-Based Combination Tour/2 hours/110 students
  • Story of Virginia Tour/90 minutes/60 students
  • Building Blocks of History:  Primary Source Investigation /30-60 minutes/60 students
  • Hands-On History Boxes /30-60 minutes/60 students

Student Workshops

Are you interested in having your students take a more hands-on approach to Virginia’s history? Select one of our interactive workshops to explore a particular period of the past in depth. Workshops are free for students, teachers, and chaperons, but reservations are required. Learn more about student workshops.

Self-guided school tours
